A GOOD WORK ETHIC

As a member of a class, you have a responsibility to try and learn, and you have a responsibility to the other pupils in the class to allow them to try and learn. It is important, therefore, that you do not call out or move from your seat unless your teacher asks you to do so. Once you enter a classroom, you should be organising yourself for the lesson that is about to begin by settling down and getting your books ready.

Listen to advice that is given to you about how you can work effectively. Try and follow that advice and do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. This is very important – teachers are there to help you.

All work should be dated and headed, neatly. Every effort should be made to ensure that all work is done to the best of your ability. If you are given a learning prep then it will help you to try and write out the important detail of what you have learnt, once you have read the work carefully. That way, you can see how much of the work you have accurately learnt.

Prep (homework) is an important method of helping you to understand fully what has been dealt with in the classroom. To help you, your parents and your teachers, you should write down in this record book, each day what preps you are required to do. You should tick off each piece of work as it is completed, and note how long it has taken you. This will give your teacher an indication of how easy or difficult you have found the work. Equally, if you only spend a short time doing the work, and then get a poor mark for your effort, it is clear that you have not spent long enough on the prep. Your parents have the opportunity to make comments in this book, especially if they have needed to give you assistance. It is important that you plan your preps so that you make sure you have enough time to do the work before it is due to be handed in. Some nights you may have a lot of prep and a clash with an ‘after school’ club or rehearsal. Your Form Tutor should be able to help you to manage such problems.

Books are to be looked after. We expect you to look after your textbooks as well as your exercise books. You should not write anything in your textbooks, and you should write only your name, your form and the subject on the cover of your exercise books. You are likely to be charged for any book that you damage or deface. Each time that you start a new exercise book, try to make it a neater and more organised record of work than in the previous book.
